Y7 and Y8 rugby teams are City Champions!

Congratulations to our Y7 and Y8 rugby teams who were crowned City Champions on Friday 24th June  - schools competed for the Sheffield Schools cup, newly named the 'Ian Anniss Cup', and were hosted by Sheffield Eagles.  The games were played against All Saints Catholic High School, and took place before the Sheffield Eagles vs Leigh Centurions match, which gave our students an amazing experience playing to 1000 fans!

The teams put in some great performances - very well done everyone!

Wimbledon Visit 2022
On the opening day of Wimbledon 2022 Mr Whitaker and Mrs Grewal-Joy took 8 students on this amazing opportunity to the championships in London.
The students were all representatives of the U15 boys' and girls' tennis teams, and they all represented the school amazingly well on the day and were a credit to Meadowhead.
We were lucky enough to win tickets to court 1 after being successful in the school ballot.
We will continue to enter the ballot to hopefully give this exciting opportunity to many others in the coming years.

Y6/Y7 Transition

We welcomed all our new Y7 pupils on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th of July to spend some time with us in school for their transition days. This allowed them to; familiarise themselves with our teachers, Y9 students leaders and get a taste for some of the fantastic lessons they will be experiencing in September.

The pupils spent all morning on the first day with their form tutors and the afternoon doing PE activities – tug of war, line ball, dodgeball and football. On Friday the students followed a full timetable. As they entered school they went straight to their form rooms and navigated school beautifully to go attend five different lessons. These consisted of Art, Science, Music, Drama, Maths, English, History, Technology, ICT. Our Y9 leaders were a real credit to Meadowhead who helped guide and support our new Y7 pupils around school during both days.

We are really excited to be welcoming our new Y7 pupils in their smart school uniforms, all ready to embark on their Secondary School journey in September. We are absolutely certain they are going to be a fantastic year group and go on to be the best version of themselves to make a difference.

Y7 Reward Tea Party

A group of twelve year 7 students (one from each form) enjoyed a tea party with their Head of Year, Mr Cooper, and Pastoral Manager, Miss Hunter on Wednesday afternoon 20th July.

The students were joined by Mrs Grewal-Joy who congratulated them all on their achievements and enjoyed a slice of cake with them.  Each student was nominated by their form teacher for this special reward, and it was a lovely way to end the term.

Y7 Lord Mayor's Parlour Visit
On Wednesday 29th June, a selection of our Year 7 pupils were invited to take part in a reading trip to the Lord Mayor’s Parlour. Our pupils were the first school in Sheffield to take part in the event and represented Meadowhead to the highest standard.

We were welcomed by The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sioned-Mair Richards and Jackie the Lady Mayoress. We were offered delicious cake and drinks and students were able to view the city’s charter as well as take part in a tour of the council chamber. This was then followed by a reading of an extract from ‘Ghost Boys’ by the Lord Mayor, and a discussion of the text. Our pupils then asked the Lord Mayor their own questions about reading and shared their thoughts on their current reading book.

It was a lovely morning - well done to all the pupils who took part!

Poetry Sessions

As part of the Everyone A Writer celebrations, poet and performer Andy Craven-Griffiths visited the school library, providing reward session for Y7, 8 and 9 students. These students were nominated by their English teachers for their submissions to the anthology and general positive behaviour and engagement in English lessons. Andy wrote poems that incorporated students’ names as an icebreaker, and students worked together to imagined lives lived as animals, wrote about their important memories using linguistic techniques and imagined worlds with dramatic rule changes governing their lives. Beautiful and imaginative pieces were written and students enjoyed a creative writing session with a successful poet.

Redbrik Competition

Budding writers and journalists from Meadowhead School were given the option to respond in 300 words to the title “What does your dream home look like?” All submissions were set to the staff at company Redbrik.

Our winning entry comes from Mimi Viney in Y9, who will now be a published writer in the next issue of Redbrik magazine, distributed locally to over 5000 people. Well done Mimi!

Back in school, the rest of the year group heard from employers in different job sectors and took part in a range of employer-led tasks over the week, including a social enterprise task with Hallam i-Lab and a moon buggy challenge with HEC Contracting. Employers and students have shared lots of positive feedback about the experience. We would like to thank the employers for the support they have offered to Meadowhead students this year.

Y10 have enjoyed a fantastic day trying out potential A level and level 3 BTEC subjects. Students have been able to experience our fantastic facilities for sixth form lessons including our superb sixth form building and our well-equipped specialist rooming. Feedback from students has been very positive – the only downside is the difficulty of choosing which subjects to pick, as the subjects are all really engaging! Our experience teaching staff have been really impressed with students’ attitudes and involvement in the lessons. We are looking forward to students’ applications here at Meadowhead Sixth Form.
Thank you to our Y10 Reading Mentors
Thank you to our Y10 Reading Mentors this year - we had nearly 30 Y10 students sign up in September, and each was paired with a Y7 to develop the younger students confidence in reading, whilst also giving our Y10s valuable experience and building relationships between year groups. GCSE and A Level Art Exhibition

Our GCSE and A Level Art Exhibition, on the 23rd June, was well attended by many, including the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor. The Art Department received a great deal of positive feedback and comments from those who viewed the work, and we were delighted at the return of the annual Exhibition after 2 years of its absence. The Exhibition showcased a wide variety of creative and imaginative work, spanning many disciplines, including painting, textiles, photography, ceramics, sculpture and animation. The talent and hard work of our Y11 and Y13 Art students was exceptionally impressive and we are very proud of all they have achieved over the past 2 challenging years. We look forward to the next one in 2023.
Y10 Art Trip
In June, our Y10 Art students experienced the galleries and museums of Sheffield first hand. The day was a busy one, and we managed to fit in visits to view exhibitions at Weston Park Museum, The Millennium Gallery and the Graves Art Gallery in town. At Weston Park, students enjoyed a variety of exhibitions, often focussing on historical collections revolving around life in Sheffield. The Millennium Gallery gave us the opportunity to see the work of bird illustrator James Audubon in the Ruskin Gallery, the Sykes Gallery collection of silver and metalwork as well as the temporary exhibition, “Not without My Ghosts,” which brought together a range of artist responses to the theme of spiritualism and all things spooky! Finally, At the Graves Gallery, students found fascinating art works from traditional landscapes and portraits to contemporary pieces. We had a great day in the sun and even managed a picnic in the Peace Gardens. Students will take what they have discovered to inform further research to use in their GCSE coursework.

Meadowhead Community Learning Trust
Grants Awarded
Bradway Primary School have been awarded a grant of £500 to support the development of their new garden, which is being created through the help of volunteers from the Meadowhead Community Learning Trust, Parents and Local Businesses. The aim of the garden is to help children become more knowledgeable about how to grow plants and to care for them. This garden will be an important part of the new enrichment provision, which is being introduced in 22/23.
Lower Meadow Primary Academy have been awarded a grant of £1000 to support the development of their new sensory garden. They are looking to create a calm, quiet space that children can use at playtimes/lunchtimes or during specific interventions that could be done outside. The children will be responsible for the maintenance of the area with support from the caretaker. This area is going to greatly support the personal development of children and young people within Lower Meadow, particularly those with additional needs who require intervention and sensory breaks throughout the day.
The Meadowhead Student Environment Group were awarded a grant of £500 to support their garden project. The garden will provide students with a safe space to support positive mental health. The group have carried out their eco school analysis and are keen to increase the amount of wildlife in the Meadowhead School grounds. They hope to encourage more wildlife through this project by planting wild flowers and the introduction of bird boxes.

MCLT Everyone A Writer

Our 9th annual Everyone A Writer celebration took place on Thursday 7th July, with the in-person evening celebration event launching this year’s anthology. Students had submitted pieces linked to the theme “New Beginnings” in their English lessons earlier in the year, and those published in the anthology were invited to the event, alongside students from Lower Meadow and Abbey Lane who joined for the celebration. Some of our pupils read their entries aloud to a packed school hall, and prizes were awarded to the best entries in primary, Y7, Y8, Y9 and Artwork categories. Next year marks ten years of Everyone A Writer and promises to be another special event!
